House Republicans Protect Working Families’ Paychecks by Blocking Tax Hike

WASHINGTON—This week, House Republicans passed Rep. Brandon Gill’s (R-Texas) resolution, H.J. Res. 142, to stop a reckless District of Columbia policy that would raise taxes on working families by decoupling D.C.’s tax code from key federal tax relief provisions included in the Working Families Tax Cuts.

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) and Rep. Gill released the following statements:

“Democrats love to talk about affordability, but when it comes time to act, they do the opposite,” Chairwoman McClain said. “Families are still feeling the squeeze from Biden-era inflation, but D.C. Democrats are trying to claw back the Republican-led tax relief that helps middle-class families. That’s wrong. Americans know how to spend their money better than Washington bureaucrats do.”

“Thanks to President Trump, the Working Families Tax Cut stopped the largest tax hike since World War II, providing Americans with historic tax relief,” Rep. Gill said. “The DC Council’s actions would block DC residents, namely service workers, from receiving these federal tax credits, from non-taxable tips and overtime, and from keeping their hard-earned money in their wallets. I am joining my colleague Sen. Rick Scott of Florida in putting a stop to the DC Council’s interference with America First tax relief.”

The resolution blocks D.C. from undoing popular, commonsense tax policies such as no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, the increased standard deduction, and other pro-worker provisions, ensuring hardworking Americans keep more of what they earn.
