House Republicans Are Standing Up For Pregnant Women On College Campuses

  • Rep. Hinson
Today, House Republicans are bringing to the floor H.R. 6914, the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, which requires colleges and universities to inform pregnant women on campus of their rights and resources, particularly protections and accommodations available to them to carry their baby to term as a condition of Title IV funding.

The Pregnant Students’ Rights Act also requires institutions to disclose information on how to file a Title IX complaint with the Department of Education, or the institution, if a student believes her rights to carry her baby were violated.

FACTS ON THE PREGNANT STUDENTS’ RIGHTS ACT (Courtesy of House Committee on Education and the Workforce Republicans):
  • Amends the Higher Education Act to ensure all college students who are pregnant or may become pregnant know their rights and protections to carry a pregnancy to term, like modified class schedules, excused absences, and more.
  • Requires universities to inform students how to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education if there is a violation of Title XI protections for pregnant students.
  • Ensures universities disseminate information regarding the rights and protections for pregnant students to carry a pregnancy to term through emails, student handbooks, at orientation, on publicly available websites, and at student health or counseling centers.
MAKE NO MISTAKE: House Republicans believe women shouldn’t have to choose between getting an education and carrying their baby to term. This bill ensures pregnant students have the resources and information necessary to have their child while getting their degree.
