Having The Last Name Biden Doesn’t Make You Above The Law

  • Joe Biden Confused Economy

In November, the House Committees on Oversight and Accountability and Judiciary issued subpoenas to Hunter Biden for a deposition to be conducted on December 13, 2023, as part of the House's impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Hunter Biden did not appear for the deposition as required by the Committees’ subpoenas. Instead, he appeared on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, where he made a public statement without taking any questions from the media and indicated that he would not comply with the subpoenas.

Congressional subpoenas are not suggestions. That is why today, House Committees on Oversight and Accountability and Judiciary will consider a resolution and accompanying report to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying lawful subpoenas.

FACTS ABOUT THE RESOLUTION TO HOLD HUNTER BIDEN IN CONTEMPT OF CONGRESS (Courtesy of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Republicans):

Hunter Biden blatantly defied lawful subpoenas to appear for a congressional deposition.

  • Our investigation has produced significant evidence revealing President Biden knew of, participated in, and benefitted from his family cashing in on the Biden name.
  • Hunter Biden was subpoenaed to answer questions about the record of evidence, but violated federal law by failing to appear before the Committee.
  • Instead, Hunter Biden appeared on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol with Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), where he made a public statement without taking any questions from the media.
Since Hunter Biden violated federal law by defying congressional subpoenas, the House Oversight Committee will markup a resolution and accompanying report to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress.
  • Hunter Biden’s willful refusal to comply with subpoenas constitutes contempt of Congress.
  • Hunter Biden will not receive special treatment due to his last name and will be held at the same standard of any other American.
  • The American people are concerned about President Biden’s corruption and expect Congress to attain answers to questions regarding the Biden family’s influence peddling schemes.
Democrats have reached the height of hypocrisy as they now seek to defend the President’s son blowing off a congressional subpoena.
  • When Democrats were in the majority, they emphasized the importance of adhering to congressional subpoenas and held multiple Trump Administration officials in contempt of Congress.
    • In 2022, Representative Jamie Raskin said, “If subpoenaed, you show up and assert any privilege you think applies to specific questions. But you can’t blow off the proceeding.”
    • Rep. Raskin also said, “The lesson is, please tell your children out there in America, if you get a subpoena to go before Congress, if you get a subpoena to go to the court, go. You have a legal responsibility to go.”
    • Rep. Raskin also insisted on depositions for those who appeared before the Jan. 6 committee. When Steve Bannon agreed to testify publicly, Raskin argued he should have to sit for a closed-door interview just like every other witness.
    • “The way that we have treated every single witness is the same, that they come in, they talk to the committee there,” Raskin said in an interview on CBS in 2022.
  • Now that Republicans are doing the investigating, Ranking Member Jamie Raskin wants witnesses to be held to a different standard.

MAKE NO MISTAKE: A two-tiered system of justice is fundamentally un-American. There cannot be one set of laws if your last name is Biden and another set of laws for the rest of America.
