House Republicans are Protecting Americans From Bans and Burdensome Regulations on Gas Stoves

House Republicans are standing up for Americans and against President Biden and extreme Democrats' green new deal agenda and its burdensome regulations and bans with the introduction of the Save Our Gas Stoves Act.

MAKE NO MISTAKE: Banning gas cooking appliances would burden American families with high electricity bills, take away consumer choice, and greatly decrease appliance functionality.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS ARE PROTECTING AMERICANS' CHOICES, WALLETS, TIME, AND JOBS:
  • Natural gas stoves are currently the preferred cooktop appliance of nearly 40% of American households.
  • Nearly 187 million Americans use natural gas because it is affordable and reliable.
  • The de facto ban on gas cooking appliances would cause Americans to spend an extra 23 hours a year waiting for water to boil.
  • Forcing Americans to switch to more expensive alternatives will only further increase costs for families. Homes with natural gas appliances save up to $1,068 per year compared to all-electric homes.
  • Natural gas is a safe, reliable, and affordable energy source for millions of Americans. Homes with natural gas appliances emit 22% less C02 than all-electric homes.
  • More than 4.1 million jobs are connected to the natural gas industry.
GAS STOVES ARE POPULAR AND AFFORDABLE:
  • More than one new residential customer signs up for natural gas service every minute and approximately 80 businesses begin new natural gas service every day.
  • Polling shows 71% of adults have a favorable opinion of natural gas.
  • Natural gas is 3.4 times more affordable than electricity and significantly more affordable than several other residential energy sources for the same amount of energy delivered.
BACKGROUND ON BIDEN AND EXTREME DEMOCRATS’ ASSAULT ON GAS STOVES:
  • In January 2023, while discussing gas stoves, CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. stated that “Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.”
  • The CPSC then voted 3-1 to issue a request for information (RFI) seeking public input on the dangers of gas stoves and proposed solutions to those hazards.
  • In February  2023, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a proposed rule that, if finalized, would set maximum annual energy consumption standards for electric and gas cooking tops manufactured and sold into commerce.
  • DOE said in a notice of proposed rulemaking, it has “tentatively concluded” that new energy conservation standards for stove appliances would be technologically feasible and economically justified.
  • DOE has estimated that manufacturers would incur conversion costs of $183.4 million to comply with the standards.
