Yesterday, the House Committee on Homeland Security, under the leadership of Chairman Mark Green (R-TN), voted to advance two articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for willfully and systemically refusing to comply with federal immigration laws and breach of the public trust. 
 
Following this vote, House Republicans held a roundtable on the impact of the Biden border crisis, which has created the worst humanitarian, national security, and homeland security crisis in our nation’s history.

Today, House Republicans will continue our work to secure our border and end the Biden border crisis by bringing to the floor the Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act, which ensures that illegal immigrants who endanger communities by driving while intoxicated or impaired can be removed from the United States. Currently, illegal migrants who are convicted of a DUI are free to stay in the U.S., despite putting Americans’ lives in jeopardy.
 
FACTS ON H.R. 6976, THE PROTECT OUR COMMUNITIES FROM DUI’S ACT (Courtesy of the House Judiciary Committee): 

• H.R. 6976 closes a gaping loophole in U.S. immigration law related to drunk driving. Because there is neither a ground of inadmissibility nor a ground of removability explicitly related to driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs, criminal aliens currently can escape accountability for their reckless actions and be free to re-offend and endanger communities. By creating a ground of inadmissibility and a ground of removability for aliens who have committed DUI offenses, this legislation provides long-awaited and much-needed reforms to safeguard American communities.
• H.R. 6976 conforms to other grounds of inadmissibility in existing law by not requiring a conviction. This bill allows authorities to use an alien’s own admission that he committed a drunk driving offense to make the alien inadmissible to the United States. In doing so, H.R. 6976 guards against far-left prosecutors who may seek to ensure that aliens are never convicted of DUI offenses so that they can remain in the United States indefinitely.
• H.R. 6976 streamlines the current arduous and lengthy process for DUI offenses, ensuring that criminal aliens who victimize Americans can be quickly removed. Under current law, aliens charged with or convicted of DUI-related crimes may rarely be found inadmissible or removable due to having been convicted of a crime that constitutes a crime involving moral turpitude (CIMT)—but generally only if that DUI offense results in injury or death. Even then, the current legal analysis requires immigration judges to jump through complicated legal hoops to remove criminal aliens from the United States. By avoiding this absurd approach, this bill ensures criminal aliens who endanger American communities by driving intoxicated are quickly removed from the country before they kill or injure Americans. In doing so, this legislation not only provides authorities another tool to protect Americans from dangerous criminal aliens but also prevents families from suffering unimaginable losses from DUI-related crashes.
