House Republicans: Only American Citizens should decide American Elections

WASHINGTON—House Republicans today passed the SAVE America Act, sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), legislation designed to protect the integrity of federal elections and restore public trust in the democratic process. The bill establishes nationwide requirements to ensure that only eligible American citizens can vote in federal elections.

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) and Rep. Roy released the following statements:

“You need an ID to get into a federal building, board a plane, or buy a beer, but somehow the Democrats think it’s too much to ask when it comes to protecting the ballot box,” Chairwoman McClain said. “The SAVE America Act is simple, common-sense election security that makes it crystal clear: only American citizens should decide American elections. House Republicans are fighting to secure our elections, restore trust in the results, and defend the foundation of our democracy from anyone who tries to game the system.”

“I’m grateful for the House’s passage of the SAVE America Act, a critical step toward restoring integrity and confidence in our elections. Roughly eighty percent of Americans—across party lines and across racial groups—support voter ID because it’s simple, reasonable, and common sense. I now call on the Senate to bring back the talking filibuster and force Democrats to explain to the American people why they oppose a basic election safeguard that enjoys broad bipartisan support,” Rep. Roy said.

The SAVE America Act:

  • Mandates a valid photo ID for all federal elections.

  • Requires documentary proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.

  • Orders states to establish programs to identify and remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls.
