WASHINGTON – House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1156 to extend the statute of limitations for prosecuting fraud in pandemic unemployment insurance (UI) programs: “Over $100 billion in fraudulent payments remain unrecovered. This underlines the need for oversight. Chairman Smith’s bill is part of President Trump and House Republicans’ overall efforts to root out waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government,” Chairwoman McClain said. H.R. 1156 extends the statute of limitations for prosecuting fraud in pandemic unemployment insurance programs from 5 to 10 years. This allows federal law enforcement to continue investigating and prosecuting fraud cases and recover taxpayer dollars beyond March 27, 2025. This bill will enable federal law enforcement to continue pursuing more than $100 billion in fraudulent UI payments. |
