WASHINGTON— House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) released the following statement after a new Council of Economic Advisers analysis estimated that the Democratic Socialists of America’s major proposals would cost American households about $355,000 over the next 10 years.
“Communists love promising Americans everything for free. What they leave out is that you are the one who gets stuck with the bill,” Chairwoman McClain said. “Nearly $49 trillion does not appear out of thin air. It comes out of your paycheck, drives up the cost of borrowing, or gets dumped on your kids and grandkids. That’s not free; that’s government grabbing your paycheck with both hands and calling it help.”
The Council of Economic Advisers analyzed seven policies in the DSA’s 2026 Workers Deserve More agenda and estimates they would add nearly $49 trillion to federal deficits from 2027 through 2036, which comes to about $355,000 per American household. If Americans were taxed enough to cover that cost, the average worker would take home about $22,000 less each year, and 30-year mortgage rates could be pushed above 12%.
