Today, House Republicans will bring a resolution to the floor condemning the recent anti-Second Amendment action of the Governor of New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham, that suspended open carry and concealed firearms in New Mexico. This is a gun ban that deprives the citizens of New Mexico of their Constitutional right to bear arms.
FACTS ABOUT H. RES. 684, CONDEMNING THE ACTIONS OF THE GOVERNOR OF NEW MEXICO, MICHELLE LUJAN GRISHAM:
On September 8, 2023, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an emergency order suspending the right to carry firearms in public across Albuquerque, and the surrounding county, for at least 30 days.
Lujan Grisham noted that state police would be responsible for enforcing what amounts to civil violations, and violators could face civil penalties and a fine of up to $5,000.
Metro Albuquerque has seen an increase in violent crime, where homicides have been on a record-setting pace. In 2022, a new record was set with 120 people killed, according to police data. This year, there have been 76 victims, as of September 8th.
Even the Democratic State Attorney General stated that he would not defend the Governor's emergency order, as it violates the constitution.
H. Res. 684 condemns the actions of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham for blatantly violating the Second Amendment to the Constitution and depriving the citizens of New Mexico of their right to bear arms.
