#WeThePeople in the Balcony: Jay Ruckelshaus

Congresswoman Susan W. Brooks (R-IN) invited Jay Ruckelshaus to be her guest at the 2016 State of the Union address. Ruckelshaus, a senior at Duke University and the 2011 Cathedral High School valedictorian, was recently awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Mike Pence and the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.  Jay has also earned the Harry S. Truman Scholarship and the Angier B. Duke Scholarship and is the founder and president of the Ramp Less Traveled, a nonprofit organization helping others with spinal cord injuries pursue higher education. In 2011, following his graduation from Cathedral, Jay sustained a severe spinal cord injury. But Ruckelshaus didn’t let his injury hold him back from chasing his dreams: he is pursuing a degree in political science at Duke University with triple minors in philosophy, history and English. At Oxford University in England, he plans to pursue a Master’s of Philosophy degree in political theory.
