House Republicans continue to press for proactive, sensible steps to combat the Zika outbreak. As we move into summer, it brings with it warmer conditions where individuals are at a higher risk of being exposed to mosquitos. Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) understands our responsibility to keep American families safe from the Zika Virus as we move into the summer months.
In a recent op-ed in Townhall, Rep. Bilirakis highlighted The Zika Response Appropriations Act (H.R. 5243) and Zika Vector Control Act (H.R. 897), two bills designed to demonstrate a thoughtful approach to attacking every angle of this threat to public health. As his home state of Florida has already seen 14 confirmed cases of Zika, Rep. Bilirakis knows firsthand how important it is to stay ahead of this issue to keep Americans safe.
In case you missed it, here are some highlights from Rep. Bilirakis’ op-ed.
On Continuing to Protect American Families
“We know this virus has the potential to be a real public health threat, and we’re dedicated to staying ahead of an outbreak. Your safety is our top priority.”
“Through this legislation, Congress can help prevent a public health crisis rather than wait for a declared emergency. I will continue working to keep those seemingly pesky mosquitos from being much more than just a pest.”
On Sensible Funding
“We responded with not only funding, but a responsible plan to designate these funds and use taxpayer dollars responsibly and effectively.”
“With this legislation, we provided immediate funding of more than $622 million for HHS agencies, State Department, and USAID agencies to fight and prevent the spread of Zika. We required the agencies to submit spending plans and notify Congress before funds are obligated, holding agencies accountable for the spending of taxpayer dollars.”
