The Latest Delay

What You Need to Know

  • Since July 2013, the President has UNILATERALLY delayed parts of his own health care law at least 23 times.
  • Obamacare IS causing business to cut back hiring and this latest delay if further evidence of that.
    • A recent survey from the Chamber of Commerce and the International Franchise Association found, “a third of franchise businesses have cut workers’ hours because of the requirement that companies with 50 or more full-time workers offer health insurance or pay a fine.”
    • The Wall Street Journal reports that the White House can’t have it both ways: “Either ObamaCare is ushering in a worker’s paradise, in which case by the White House’s own logic exempting businesses from its ministrations is harming employees. Or else the mandate really is leading business to cut back on hiring, hours and shifting workers to part-time as the evidence in the real economy suggests.”

The Latest Delay Raises More Questions About the Law

“If not illegal, the changes are fueling suspicion among Obama-loathing conservatives, and confusion among the rest of us. Even the law’s most fervent supporters are frustrated.” (Why I’m Getting Sick of Defending Obamacare, Ron Fournier, National Journal, 2/11/14)

“This latest delay is really going to set people off more than the others simply because it involves a delay past the election, you know, past the election and that screams of politics.” (Mark Halperin, MSNBC’s Morning Joe, 2/11/14)

“But lawmakers from both parties have repeatedly raised concerns over the president waiving provisions of the law unilaterally.” (Some Employers Are Given Delay on Health Law, Robert Pear, New York Times, 2/10/14)

“’ObamaCare” is useful shorthand for the Affordable Care Act not least because the law increasingly means whatever President Obama says it does on any given day. His latest lawless rewrite arrived on Monday as the White House decided to delay the law’s employer mandate for another year and in some cases maybe forever.” (Obama Rewrites ObamaCare, Wall Street Journal, 2/10/14)

“The change is sure to raise more questions about the health and implementation of the law.” (Republicans renew ObamaCare battle after latest mandate delay, Fox News, 2/11/14)

“Except for the die-hard Obama spinners, there was widespread recognition that this is another Hail Mary as the clock runs down to the November elections.” (Obamacare delay, instant ridicule, Jennifer Rubin, Washington Post, 2/11/14)

“The move marks a further retreat in the rollout of the Affordable Care Act at a time when the White House hopes to convince a skeptical public ahead of this fall’s congressional elections that the law works.” (U.S. to further delay Obamacare employer mandate, Noam N. Levey, LA Times, 2/11/14)
