As Republicans rolled out a unified framework for tax reform this week, House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Ways and Means Committee Chair Kevin Brady (R-TX), Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL), Chair of the Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Tax Policy, and Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ) participated in a press conference on Capitol Hill to rally with a number of conservative organizations.
Participating organizations included the Taxpayers Protection Alliance, the National Taxpayers Union, FreedomWorks, Americans for Tax Reform, the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council, and the Family Business Coalition.
The press conference marks a mounting level of conservative support for the Republicans’ Unified Framework for Fixing our Broken Tax Code. Just today, a dozen major organizations expressed in a letter to Congress their support for tax reform, and reiterated the importance of passing a budget in order to move forward. Here are the key quotes from this week’s press conference:
Chair McMorris Rodgers:
“I believe this is our moment. What an exciting time for America! We are on a mission to improve everyone’s life in this country. …Tax reform, bringing down tax rates, is the way that we ensure a bright future for everyone….All of these details are available at fairandsimple.gop. We’ll keep you posted. …Our plan is about more jobs, fairer taxes, and bigger paychecks. Our plan celebrates American innovation, American ingenuity. It empowers people. …This is really a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and I’m excited to be a part of restoring America to be the land of opportunity for every person in this country.”
“I’m proud to stand with these conservative organizations and with my fellow members. Americans have been waiting for years for Washington to fix our broken tax code. They’ve been waiting for years for better jobs, more take-home pay, and a stronger economy….House Republicans joined President Trump and our Senate colleagues in letting the American people know that we’re taking action — action that will bring more jobs, fairer taxes, and bigger paychecks. We’re closer than ever to finishing what we’ve started for the American people. …this is our year to chart a new course for America.”
“We are in the midst of a great debate in this country, and it’s an economic debate. And the fault lines are this: there are some people who have convinced themselves and are trying to convince others that the economy is a fixed pie; that it’s a zero-sum game; that if someone is successful, that comes at the expense of someone else…we fundamentally reject that. We’re here to demonstrate that it’s not a zero-sum game. The economy is buoyant, and if we create an environment where it can grow, people benefit, and the proof will be in the growth we will see as a net result of this.”
“This is more than a tax cut. This is rewriting a substantial portion of almost 70,000 pages of tax code. This is about all of your economic futures. This is about this society’s ability to have the cash flow to pay for the promises we’ve made. But it’s also the ability for my two-year-old daughter to have economic opportunity as she gets older. Do not underestimate what a big deal this is.”
