a tax code that celebrates the dignity of work

This morning, House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) led a press conference with House Republican Leadership to discuss how House Republicans are taking action on pro-growth tax reform.

As Chair McMorris Rodgers meets with families and individuals from across her Eastern Washington district, she hears a consistent request: more jobs, fairer taxes, and bigger paychecks. And that’s what House Republicans are working on. For more on our plan, visit www.fairandsimple.gop.

Joining the Conference Chair, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI), and Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL), Chair of the Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Tax Policy.

Below are excerpts from the Chair’s remarks:

“We are on a mission to build a brighter future for everyone in this country. …our tax code [is] pretty fundamental to freedom and opportunity for every person. There’s dignity in work, and too often our tax code is punishing it.”

“I hear from people in Eastern Washington how they feel like they’re working harder, saving, doing all the right things, but yet falling behind. Many, many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. This is our moment to lift the financial burden off these hardworking men and women, give people more money in their pocketbooks to help manage the cost of living.”

“America was built on freedom, opportunity, and hard work. It’s the foundation of innovation, ingenuity, and it’s time that our tax code reflects those priorities. Reforming the tax code is how we help lift those who were left behind.

“We are excited to present to you more of the details on this tax code — a plan that restores the dignity of work, create more jobs, and increase take-home pay so America will continue to be the land of opportunity.”
