Tax Reform: It’s all hands on deck

As the Ways and Means Committee continues its work marking up the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) has been hearing directly from families across the country on her “Faces of Tax Reform” tour — the very men and women who inspired this bill. She recently joined Bloomberg, Bloomberg Radio, and CBS News to champion our work to bring the American people more jobs, fairer taxes, and bigger paychecks.

“It’s great to have the President, the Vice President, Ivanka, the administration all on board. It’s all hands on deck to get tax relief to hardworking men and women all across this country. [With Vice President Pence], we talked about some of the specifics — provisions related to small business owners. Our goal is to bring down those rates to World War II levels…because that’s the engine of economic growth. We talked about the Child Tax Credit and the importance of that to hardworking men and women. Yes, we also need to address the deficit. It’s a top priority to use both ensure that we are cutting spending, but also getting this economy growing. That’s what tax relief will mean…we’ve had a stagnant economy and that is why it is so important that we move forward.”

“We’re deciding how best to move forward. We’ve laid out a framework that the House, the Senate, the President have agreed to for providing tax relief to every single person in this country. Now we have to work on those details. That’s the give and take every day.”

“I would love to see the individual mandate [in Obamacare] repealed. The question is the timing and what vehicle is best to do that. Right now we’re staying focused on tax reform, keeping the issues for providing relief for low- and middle-income families at the top of the list. So, that’s where we’re focused on collapsing the brackets, bringing down small business rates…and really closing loopholes. Bringing down the corporate rate, that has become the highest in the world for developed countries, so that jobs that have been moving overseas because our companies have been being bought by foreign companies. Those jobs would come back as we make America the best place to start a business, grow a business, and expand a business. Those are all jobs, those are all opportunities for hardworking men and women.”

“We are working to deliver this pro-family, pro-economic growth tax relief for hardworking men and women all across this country…we want to really focus on families while also providing that economic growth…we want to ensure that these policies increase take-home pay, increase the job opportunities that people have….low-, middle-income families have been our focus, as well as small businesses, where 70-80% of jobs are created.”

“Our focus is on small businesses, wanting to make sure their rates come down; that we bring jobs back from overseas, so bringing down the corporate tax rate which is now the highest in the world for the developed countries…that’s what America needs. That’s how we’re going to ensure that people are optimistic and that they have confidence that they’re going to have the opportunity for a better life.”
