McMorris Rodgers: Hope and optimism have returned

House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) led this morning’s House Republican Leadership press conference to highlight her time at home in Eastern Washington and to discuss some of the many ways the American people are Better Off Now than they were two years ago. Thanks to Republican policies, America is stronger at home and abroad, with a booming economy, safer communities, and a stronger military. For more on our work, visit

The Chair’s Remarks as Prepared for Delivery:

Good morning and welcome back. The People’s House is continuing our work to improve people’s lives and keep Americans safe.

We’re moving the appropriations process forward, and we’re pleased to see the Senate doing its part.

This week we are taking action to strengthen our homeland security, keep our communities safe from violent criminals, increase our energy exports, and also, improve financial counseling for students and parents.

Also happening today in Energy and Commerce: We’ll hear from Jack Dorsey about what Twitter is doing to stop bias, be transparent, and rebuild trust.

Just as we were wrapping up the August district work period, consumer confidence again hit an 18-year high.

People are dreaming again and they are optimistic about the future, and that includes customers who shop at The Tin Roof, a family-owned furniture store in Spokane, Washington.

The owners of The Tin Roof recently told me that more people are walking into their store and buying higher quality furniture.

They said business is better, so they are purchasing two new trucks, they are increasing wages, and for the first time in nearly a decade, they are offering health insurance to their employees again.

These are the kind of results that Republicans promised with lower taxes and smarter regulations — and we’ve delivered.

After years of sluggish growth, our economy is booming, America is confident again, and people are better off now.

I’m pleased that Rep. Bradley Byrne is joining us today. There’s a record number of people working in his state, and a recent study just showed people in Alabama will save more than a billion dollars in electricity costs thanks to tax reform.

To hear directly from families he represents on what this means for them, Rep. Byrne just criss-crossed Alabama’s First District on his Better Off Now tour.

Thanks, Bradley for being here! And, I invite everyone to visit Better.GOP to learn more.
