We’re excited about what tax reform means for people

This morning, House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) led the weekly House Republican Leadership press conference to discuss how the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act continues to deliver more jobs, bigger paychecks, and fairer taxes to the American people.

Chair McMorris Rodgers invited Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL) to join and share what tax reform means for his district. He recently met with several men and women who work at the Litchfield, Illinois Walmart who received bonuses and wage increases.

The Chair’s Remarks:

“Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. And beyond Valentine’s Day, this is a great February in that everybody has an opportunity to check their paycheck. For many it means an increase in take home pay.

“I was talking to a guy in Spokane Valley not too long ago and he noticed that he had $100 more on his paycheck and he actually thought it was a glitch. But it wasn’t a glitch! It was our promise kept to hardworking men and women in this country, many who feel like they’re the forgotten man and woman.”

“We’re also hearing from small businesses…that are expanding, that are growing, announcing [they’re] hiring more employees.

“It reminded me last summer I had the chance to visit Capital Candy Jar and they just recently expanded here just a few blocks away. They are known for their chocolate-covered Oreo cookies with sprinkles. I was lucky to find probably some of the last that are on the shelf. They also have hired some employees with disabilities with Down syndrome in particular, like Gina–I got to meet her last summer. She was so excited to have a job.

“We want to give that opportunity to more people and I’m especially excited about the provision within the tax bill that expanded the ABLE accounts, that means more people, especially those with disabilities, can go explore work. It is their opportunity to reach their full potential and that is why tax reform is even more than dollars and cents.

“Tax reform is about ensuring everyone has an opportunity for a better life.

“We’ve also invited Congressman Rodney Davis to join us today. He’s from the 13th District in Illinois. In Illinois, Ameren, their local utility company, has announced lower rates, American Community Bank and Trust has given $500 bonuses, and Boeing, which has ties to Washington state and Illinois has announced $100 million in investment and workforce development. Rodney is going to share about visiting Walmart recently and talking to their employees. There is a lot of good news out there and we’re excited about what it means for people.”
