During a press conference today on Capitol Hill, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) reminded us that as Memorial Day approaches, it is important to remember those that gave their lives in service to their country. He said that although this is a day to commemorate the fallen, it is important to remember those who still live, who have made incredible sacrifices for all of us. Kinzinger added, “As a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, I saw firsthand what that kind of sacrifice meant.”
Sadly, the VA has become disconnected from its mission of adequately serving our nation’s veterans.
In light of recent comments by VA Secretary Robert McDonald comparing wait times at the VA to waiting in lines at Disney theme parks, it is vital that we work to find ways to challenge the status quo and provide the world class care that our veterans deserve. The systemic failings at the VA must be addressed. We can do better. We must do better.
Mr. Secretary, the VA is not the “Happiest Place on Earth“, which is why Republicans are working to find solutions that will help to create a 21st century Department of Veterans Affairs. One that puts veterans first, not politics.
Rep. Kinzinger closed today’s press conference with this reminder to all of us: “It is important to remember why we are out here and why we do what we do, and that is for a broader mission, a mission of America.”
