House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement after the House passed the FISA Amendments Reauthorization Act of 2017, sponsored by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), Chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

“Supporting and defending the Constitution against all enemies is my fundamental duty. I agree with President Trump that we must ensure that our ability to collect intelligence on foreign persons on foreign soil must be maintained so that terrorists can’t exploit our desire to protect the privacy and civil liberties of American citizens to commit terrorist attacks like those that occurred on 9/11. That’s why I voted to preserve this important anti-terrorism tool, and what today’s vote on the FISA section 702 authority was about. I also voted to add additional protections to the program, such as requiring a warrant for domestic law enforcement agencies to access the database so information about U.S. citizens can’t be inappropriately obtained and used. Although those weren’t adopted, I heeded President Trump’s call to get smart and renew this authority. Moving forward, I support examining anti-terrorism laws more broadly to guarantee that tools to prevent foreign terrorism can’t be exploited or abused to inappropriately target Americans for non-national security purposes.”
