Washington – House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) released the following statement in response to the violent clashes in Venezuela:
“The images coming out of Venezuela—which the despotic Nicolás Maduro regime attempted to internally censor—are truly horrific. Despite Maduro’s efforts, these images are being shown on screens worldwide: images of protesters bravely rejecting a regime that has allowed Venezuela to plunge into a humanitarian crisis. These protesters were met with appalling violence.
“Venezuela is being rocked by a toxic mixture of failed socialist policies, tyrannical leadership, and the insidious influence of Cuba, Russia, and Iran. It is past time for Nicolás Maduro, the country’s illegitimate ex-president, to step aside. The Venezuelan people deserve better. They deserve freedom.
“As the Trump Administration was the first to note, Juan Guaidó is Venezuela’s legitimate interim President—a fact that dozens of other nations have also recognized. Nicolás Maduro must now leave Venezuela, as he intended to do yesterday, and allow the Venezuelan people to have the bright future and God-given freedom that they deserve.”
