House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement after the House passed the Community Safety and Security Act (H.R. 6691). Sponsored by Rep. Karen Handel (R-GA), this legislation clarifies the U.S. Code definition of “crime of violence” to address concerns expressed by the Supreme Court in United States v. Dimaya.

“The primary duty of the federal government is the safety and security of the American people, and that includes keeping our children safe from violent and dangerous criminals. By clarifying the definition of ‘crime of violence,’ we are helping ensure that violent criminals serve proper time for their offenses against our community. I applaud Rep. Handel’s leadership on this bill. We promised the American people safer communities, and with commonsense reforms like these, they are and will continue to be Better Off Now.”
