McMorris Rodgers Responds to President’s Plan to Close Guantanamo Bay Prison

Washington, D.C. – House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement after the President announced his plans to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.

“The House and Senate came together last year to pass legislation that prevents the transfer of terrorist detainees to U.S. soil. What the President proposed today not only opens American citizens up to unnecessary dangers – it’s against the law. By failing to provide the critical details required for such a proposal, he further illustrates that he doesn’t take the growing terrorist threat against this country seriously.

“The Guantanamo Bay facility serves a vital purpose in our ongoing battle against terrorism around the world, and it should remain open and available to house dangerous enemy combatants we take off of the battlefield. In order to restore a more confident America, the safety and security of the American people needs to be the top priority of this administration – not playing politics.”
