House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement after the House passed the final version of legislation to provide Fiscal Year 2019 appropriations to the Departments of Defense, Health and Human Services, Labor and Education. The bill also provides funding for other federal agencies for which appropriations bills have yet to be enacted.
“For our nation to be a diplomatic power, it must be a military power. To be a military power, we must be an economic power. It’s all connected. That’s why, in addition to growing the economy,we’ve made it a priority to rebuild our military. After years of neglect, the previous administration left our armed forces overstretched, undertrained and depleted. It created a readiness crisis that has jeopardized our troops’ lives and threatened our national security.
“To give military the certainty it needs to keep us safe, we are sending a bill to the President’s desk on time to provide the Department of Defense funding for a full year. For the first time in a decade, they won’t have to operate under a short-term continuing resolution. With this certainty and a pay raise for our troops, including those who serve at Fairchild Air Force Base, our military is Better Off Now.
“In addition to providing critical funding for our warfighters, this appropriations measure contains important priorities for the health and safety of our communities. It supports school safety and will help us combat the opioid epidemic. It also boosts resources for the National Institutes of Health to fund Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome research. I sincerely thank leaders on the Appropriations Committee, especially subcommittee chairs Kay Granger and Tom Cole, for their work on behalf of the American people.”
NOTE: In August, the Chair wrote in her hometown paper, the Spokesman-Review, why Eastern Washington is Better Off Now because Republicans have kept our promise to grow the economy, rebuild our military and raise pay for our troops. CLICK HERE to read it.
