No Exemptions for Congress: McMorris Rodgers Votes for Equal Treatment under AHCA

Communications • May 4, 2017

House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement after the House passed legislation introduced by Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) to ensure Members of Congress and their staff are treated the same way as everyone else under the American Health Care Act.

“Members of Congress and congressional staff should live by the same rules as everyone else. Period. Thanks to the leadership of Rep. McSally, our American Health Care Act and all of its amendments will apply equally to everyone, including Members of Congress, as it should.”

Background:

The American Health Care Act is being considered under budget reconciliation, which constrains what can and cannot be included in bill text. Because of this, the bill may allow an inequity to exist that could exempt Members of Congress from some provisions — an inequity corrected by Rep. McSally’s legislation.
