Washington, D.C. – House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement after the House passed the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 (H.R. 2810). Sponsored by House Armed Services Committee Chair Mac Thornberry (R-TX), the bill rebuilds our military through equipment modernization and improves readiness. It also reforms the way that the Pentagon does business and gives them the tools they need to make better, more responsible decisions.

“After a half-decade of cuts, we are strengthening our military readiness and restoring our military might. The men and women who keep us safe are our country’s most valuable asset, and we have a responsibility to provide them the resources, care, and pay raise they need, earned, and deserve,” said Chair McMorris Rodgers. “We are putting Americans’ safety and security first by providing much-needed resources to effectively defend our country. I applaud Chair Thornberry for his leadership in the House’s efforts to fulfill our promise to all Americans to keep them safe and free.”

NOTE: At a House Republican Leadership press conference on Tuesday, Chair McMorris Rodgers said, “We have two major votes this week that are very important to people all across this country. One is providing relief — relief from the tax burden. We’re addressing tax reform for the first time in 31 years. The second is a vote to rebuild our military. To be a diplomatic power, you must be a military power. And to be a military power, you must be an economic power. These two votes…will mean a brighter, safer future for all Americans.”
