WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement after the House passed the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2018 (H.R. 3053). Introduced by Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL), this legislation provides practical reforms to the nation’s nuclear waste management policy to fulfill the federal government’s legal obligations to dispose of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste.
“After years of research and billions of dollars, it’s time to make Yucca Mountain a reality and ensure that our spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste is disposed of properly. For nuclear energy to be part of our ‘all of the above’ approach to energy, it’s important that any decisions be made with science and safety in mind — not politics. I applaud Rep. Shimkus and the Energy and Commerce Committee for their continued leadership on this issue.”
