McMorris Rodgers Highlights House’s Work at Faith and Freedom Coalition

House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) joined the Faith and Freedom Coalition to highlight the work House Republicans have done on the American people’s priorities. From our booming economy to national security to protecting children, House Republicans’ pro-family, pro-growth policies are making a difference in people’s lives.

Here’s what you may have missed:

ON THE HOUSE’S WORK

“I am proud of the work we’ve done and there are a lot of steps we have taken and there are more that needs to be done. But the President, I want to start with the president and the senate recognizing that they have confirmed the most circuit court judges than any other president in his first year…And these are justices that will uphold the Constitution like we saw this week in the Masterpiece Cakeshop, such an important case, and we are grateful the judges who respect the Constitution, freedom of religion, and free speech.

“Just recently the house passed the FIRST STEP Act, and this is looking at federal prison reform. Again, taking that first step so that the reentry into society is smoother, and this is really about giving people a second chance. We have passed legislation in the House to protect especially young people from sex predators and to prohibit these websites that have been used to solicit and be involved in sex trafficking in America….this legislation has been signed into law and those websites are down today.

“In the House we have moved forward, we have passed several pro-life bills. The Hyde amendment is now permanent. We’ve passed Born Alive Abortions Survivor Act; we passed the Pain Capable Unborn Children Protection Act for protecting the statement that abortion would be illegal after twenty weeks….And we have led on defunding Planned Parenthood. The House passed that bill and, as you all know, it came one vote short in the Senate. But I am personally pleased and encouraged to see the administration’s actions and President Trump’s leadership in making sure that federal dollars are not going to be funding abortions or Planned Parenthood.”

OUR BOOMING ECONOMY

“I mentioned earlier that our oldest was born with that extra 21st chromosome. With it, he’s given me a whole new passion and purpose to serve in Congress. As a part of the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act that was passed this year, I was pleased to see a couple of bills that I had been working on for those with disabilities to be included in that legislation…ABLE Financial Planning and ABLE to Work.

“ABLE to Work will allow those with disabilities to explore work in an internship or a part-time job, take their earnings and put them in their ABLE accounts so it doesn’t count against their other benefits. One of the barriers is that they often…fearful they are going to lose their benefits, so they don’t even go to explore work. This is going to change and open up the opportunity to those to work.

“We are celebrating the economic boom that’s taking place in America. Just this week we are celebrating the million of jobs that have been created, largely driven by the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act. We have more job openings, 6.7 million job openings, in America and 6.3 million unemployed. So we have more job openings than unemployed. And you know why that’s important? Because a job is so much more than a paycheck. A job is what gives you purpose and dignity and is the foundation of life. So when we are creating more jobs we are creating more opportunities. America is the land of more opportunities. That starts with a job.”

STRENGTH OF AMERICA

“Finally, I just want to say I believe that the strength of America begins with our families. And when our families are strong, then our country will be strong. That’s why we live in the greatest country in the world — because we believe in life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

“I pray every day that God’s purpose in my life will be deeply rooted in my heart. And I pray that I will operate in the spirit of power and love, and a sound mind because God’s spirit is within me. I thank you all for being here. Thanks for your commitment, more than anything, to the family and to our fundamental principles and values that have made America strong.

“I think it was Ronald Reagan who said freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not passed down in the bloodstream it has to be fought for and defended. That is what you all are doing here by being a part of the Faith and Freedom Coalition and being here on Capitol Hill. So, thank you for your part in defending freedom in America thank you very much.”
