Chair McMorris Rodgers, Remarks as Prepared for Delivery:

“Good morning! There’s a lot of talk in Washington about opportunity. But today, I want to talk about real opportunity for kids in classrooms all across the country. Many years ago, back in Kettle Falls, Washington, I was one of those kids. I showed my animals at the 4-H county fairs every summer, and my parents used to tell me, ‘Cathy, now you can save this money so you can go to college one day!’ So I did. And I became the first in my family to graduate from college. But paying for school wasn’t easy then – and it’s even harder now.

“So I worked at the McDonald’s Drive-Thru in Colville, Washington to pay my way through school. And years later – as I still pay my student loans every month – I can say with certainty that my education was the best investment of my life. That’s why we’re strengthening educational opportunities for every child in this country – no matter where they’re from or how much money their families make or what challenges they’ve faced. Everyone in this country should have an equal opportunity to get a great education, from elementary school to college – and we stand here committed to making that happen.”
