House Democrats Call For Reckless Cuts To The Military
29 House Democrats signed a letter to House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-WA) and the leading Republican on the committee Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX) calling for a reduction in defense spending.
- Politico: “Progressive lawmakers push to slash defense budget during pandemic”
This reckless proposal would only endanger innocent American lives and make our country more vulnerable in the wake of this global pandemic. We still face threats from adversaries across the world and weakening our military would embolden their malign activity.
This letter is another example of how Democrats are attempting to use the spread of the coronavirus as an opportunity to try and enact their dangerous agenda. Whether it was Rep. Clyburn telling his colleagues that the virus represented a chance for them to restructure things to fit their vision, Rep. Jayapal saying that their party should use the suffering of the American people as “leverage” to get their policies passed into law, or this letter calling for damaging cuts to our military, it’s clear that House Democrats cannot be trusted to govern because they have a track record of putting their political priorities before our country’s best interest.
Ed & Labor Democrats Cancel Hearing At Last Minute
House Democrats on the Education & Labor Committee announced last night that they were canceling a hearing scheduled to take place later this morning that was supposed to focus on keeping workers safe from COVID-19. Following the cancellation of this hearing, the leading Republican on the Committee, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), and leading Republican on the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-AL), issued the below statement:
“The topic of tomorrow’s hearing – the federal government’s actions to protect workers from COVID-19 – is an issue Congressional Democrats assert is a top priority. Yet, with less than 24 hours-notice committee Democrats unilaterally decided to cancel the hearing. This very unusual action is perplexing, especially given the credentials of the confirmed witnesses and Chairman Scott’s recent comments saying, ‘let us commit to doing everything we can to keep workers safe.’
“Ten committee Republicans were en route to Washington to discuss this important topic. Senior officials from the Department of Labor (DOL) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) were confirmed to participate and ready to offer testimony and field questions on this timely topic as well.
“Unfortunately, Committee Democrats decided at the eleventh hour to sit on the sidelines. Our Republican members were prepared and eager to return to work to hear from senior administration officials about ongoing efforts to help ensure workers’ safety. It is disappointing that Committee Democrats refused to take yes for an answer. Instead, they want to wait to conduct Committee business from the comfort of their own homes. While frustrating, this course of action is consistent with their latest partisan move, passage of Pelosi’s proxy voting scheme, which upended over 200 years of precedent and allowed Democrats to collect a paycheck while staying home at a time when many Americans are desperate to get back to work and need Congress to do the same.”
Democrats Refuse To Take Steps To Hold China Accountable
In a seven-page letter sent yesterday, Republicans on the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis called on Chairman Clyburn to join their efforts to hold the Chinese Communist Party and the World Health Organization responsible for their respective roles in exacerbating the coronavirus pandemic, and also urged him to call the Chinese Ambassador to the United States and the Director-General of the WHO to testify before the committee under oath.
Specifically, the letter says that the Select Subcommittee should investigate China’s efforts to obscure the virus’ origins, their manipulation of the WHO to cover up the severity of the initial outbreak, and reports that they are now using the crisis to steal American medical research.
Instead of focusing on this important priority, Democrats on the Select Subcommittee have harassed American companies that received PPP loans and looked for opportunities to launch partisan attacks against the Trump Administration.
