House Acts to Protect Freedom of Speech from IRS Abuse

WASHINGTON, DC – House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) today released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 3865, the Stop Targeting of Political Beliefs by the IRS Act of 2014:

“Americans should not have to worry that their political beliefs may become the target of politically-motivated IRS audits. The Founders enshrined the right to freedom of speech as a core principle on which our country is built, and today the House acted to preserve that freedom. This legislation passed with bipartisan support, showing that this is not a Republican or Democratic issue, but a concern for all Americans. House Republicans will continue to fight the abuses of the IRS and other federal agencies. I commend Chairman Camp and my colleagues on the Ways and Means Committee for their tireless oversight efforts, and we will continue to work together to hold this government accountable to the American people.”
