Dems Say No…AGAIN

Nearly 30 days into the government shutdown, Republicans tried yet again to bring Democrats to the table to negotiate a bipartisan deal that secures the border and addresses the humanitarian and national security crisis… Dems’ reaction was predictable:

Democrats, in their obsession to tell the president no, rejected it before they even heard the details. Among them:

  • $805 million in humanitarian aid
  • 2,750 border agents
  • 75 new immigration judges
  • $5.7 billion for a steel wall
  • Relief for 700,000 DACA recipients

Their behavior has reached the point of absurdity. Democrats have yet to present a counter offer, or even begin to participate in good-faith negotiations.

Even worse, leading Democrats are on the record supporting deals like this in the past:

Rep. Steny Hoyer, May 2018: Democrats Open To Wall To Secure DACA Deal “He was nonetheless open to providing some wall funding as part of a bipartisan compromise to salvage the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which Trump is trying to dismantle. “We have offered [wall funding] in the past,” Hoyer told reporters during his weekly press briefing in the Capitol. “I think that would be something we certainly could negotiate.” (Mike Ellis, “Hoyer: Dems Open To Wall Funding To Secure DACA Deal,” The Hill, 5/15/18)

Rep. James Clyburn, September 2017: ‘There’s An Environment Now For Something Big To Happen’ on DACA “During a discussion of DACA on Thursday’s “MSNBC Live,” Representative Clyburn (D-SC) argued holding children responsible for their parents’ mistakes goes against American values and those who believe in Christianity and Judaism “ought to practice what we say we preach.” Clyburn said, “I know that there’s an environment now for something big to happen” on DACA.” (Ian Hanchett, “Clyburn on DACA: People Who Believe in Christianity and Judaism Ought to Practice What They Preach,” Breitbart, 9/7/17)

Joe Biden, February 2018: Democrats Should Give Wall to Save DACA “If you had a wall that provided security that wasn’t an absolute waste of money — meaning national security and the technical means to protect it, and all these kids had a path to citizenship — I’d be inclined to do that,” Biden, 75, told Chris Cuomo on CNN. “You’d give Trump the political victory in order to get the deal done?” Cuomo asked. “I don’t care about his political victory,” Biden responded. “That’s not how I view politics, whether or not it’s a personal victory or not.” (Todd Beamon, “Joe Biden: Dems Should Give Trump Wall to Save DACA,” Newsmax, 2/6/18)

Rep. Luis Gutierrez on Wall For DACA Deal ‘I Say Pay It’ “But even Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), a leader of the faction of Democrats most supportive of more liberal immigration policy, said Sunday he’s willing to cave on the wall if it means sparing hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients. “If that’s their ransom call, I say pay it,” Gutierrez said on “This Week.” (Erin Durkin, “Dems Offer To Accept Border Wall In Exchange For DACA Deal — But GOP Won’t Budge,” New York Daily News, 1/21/18)

Bottom line: Democrats own this shutdown. Their boundless hypocrisy and refusal to negotiate not only ignores the humanitarian crisis at the border, but hangs 800,000 federal workers out to dry.
