House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) released the following statement after the House passed the Korean Interdiction and Modernization of Sanctions Act (H.R. 1644). Introduced by Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA), the bipartisan legislation strengthens sanctions against North Korea by targeting revenue sources and use of international ports. It also requires the administration to determine if North Korea should be re-designated as a state sponsor of terrorism.
“As North Korea becomes a growing threat to its neighbors and the western United States, we can no longer ignore the aggression of Kim Jong Un. Under the leadership of Chairman Royce and the Foreign Affairs Committee, today’s vote builds on the sanctions we passed last year and increases the President’s authority to target those who financially support the dictatorship’s nuclear program and human rights abuses.”
