Washington, D.C. – House GOP Conference Chair and Congresswoman Liz Cheney (WY-AL) issued the following statement after it was announced that Rep. Elijah Cummings (MD-07), Chairman of the House Committee of Oversight and Reform, passed away at the age of 68:

“The news that our friend and colleague Elijah Cummings has passed away marks a sad day for the members of the United States Congress, the people of Baltimore, and the entire nation.

“Elijah’s passion for serving his beloved city was easy to see in everything that he did, and his determination to fight for equality and civil rights will never be forgotten.  He was a friend to all and sought to use his position in Congress to bridge divides, not widen them.

“My thoughts, and the thoughts of all House Republicans, are with Elijah’s wife, Maya, and his three children. We mourn his passing and are all grieving for his loved ones.”
