Chair McMorris Rodgers Welcomes British Prime Minister Theresa May

McMorris Rodgers: “It’s my honor to welcome America’s newest friend at Number 10 Downing Street, the Honorable Theresa May”

Today, at the Congress of Tomorrow — House and Senate Republican Retreat, hosted by the Congressional Institute, House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA)  took the stage to introduce British Prime Minister Theresa May, the first serving foreign leader to address this retreat in history.

Following are McMorris Rodgers’s remarks, as delivered:

Nearly every day as we walk to votes, to meetings in the Capitol, we pass by one of America’s greatest friends in the small rotunda that we call Freedom Foyer – Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill…

And, on his statue, it reads: In the days to come the British and American peoples will for their own safety and for the good of all, walk together side by side in majesty, in justice, and in peace.’

Prime Minister May joins us this afternoon at a time of renewed opportunity for both the United States and the United Kingdom in continuing walking side by side.

Her decision to visit America – soon after our Republican-led government took power – is a signal of her commitment to strengthen the special relationship our countries enjoy.

It’s my honor to welcome America’s newest friend from Number 10 Downing Street – The first foreign leader to visit and address our retreat – the Honorable Theresa May.
