WASHINGTON, DC – House Republican Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) issued the following statement tonight after President Obama’s speech on combating the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL):
“Tonight, on the eve of an anniversary that marks our nation’s darkest hour, the President articulated his strategy to defeat ISIL and combat the rise of Islamic militants abroad. The threat of terrorism is pervasive. It is real. And it cannot be ignored. That is why I support the President in his efforts to build a broad coalition in Iraq and Syria, and I will work with my colleagues in Congress to ensure he has the support he needs to achieve these objectives.
“But as we fight a terrorist organization that is stronger and more perilous than ever before, Americans need more than just rhetoric. We need a vision. We need a bold, comprehensive, long-term vision that shows our nation’s unwavering commitment to fight terrorism at home and abroad. A single speech will not eradicate the growing threat Islamic militants pose to America and our allies. So I hope the President’s counterterrorism campaign is at the crux of a broader strategy to combat terrorism.
“In the name of freedom and democracy — and with gratitude to the men and women who protect us — we will not waver until the terrorists are destroyed.”
