CONGRESSWOMAN ELISE STEFANIK
CHAIRWOMAN
On Tuesday, December 6, 2011, the House is scheduled to consider S. 1541, a bill to revise the Federal charter for the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. to reflect a change in eligibility requirements for membership, under a suspension of the rules, requiring a two-thirds majority for passage.
S. 1541 was introduced by Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) on September 12, 2011, and was referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. The Senate approved S. 1541 on November 18, 2011, by unanimous consent.
S. 1639 would amend title 36, the United States Code, to authorize the American Legion under its federal charter to provide guidance and leadership to its state and territorial organizations and local chapters. The bill would prohibit the federal charter from controlling or otherwise influencing their specific activities and conduct.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has not released a cost estimate for S. 1639 as of press time.
