H.Res. 793 is expected to be considered on the floor of the House on Tuesday, October 20, 2009, under a motion to suspend the rules, requiring a two-thirds vote for passage. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-TX) on October 1, 2009.
H.Res. 793 would resolve that Congress:
• "Recognizes that the contributions of chemical scientists and engineers have created new jobs, boosted economic growth, and improved the Nation's health and standard of living;
• "Supports the goals and ideals of National Chemistry Week; and
• "Encourages the people of the United States to observe National Chemistry Week with appropriate recognition, activities, and programs to demonstrate the importance of chemistry to everyday life."
According to the resolution's findings, National Chemistry Week was established in 1987 by the American Chemical Society to enhance public appreciation of the chemical sciences and to educate the public, particularly school-age children, about the important role of chemistry in everyday life.
