Background

In 1984, Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman nominated by a major political party as its candidate for Vice President of the United States.  Prior to her political career, she was a teacher and attorney, serving in the New York State's District Attorney Office.  She served in Congress from 1979 to 1985.
