Floor Situation

On­­­­ Wednesday, November 30, 2016, the House will consider H.R. 6303, to designate facilities of the United States Post Office, establish new zip codes, and for other purposes, under suspension of the rules. H.R. 6303 was introduced on November 14, 2016, by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and was referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Bill Summary

H.R. 6303 instructs the United States Postal Service to designate a single, unique zip code to improve the provision of mail delivery for the following areas:

  • Miami Lakes, Florida
  • Storey County, Nevada
  • Flanders, Northampton, and Riverside in the Town of Southampton, New York
  • Ocoee, Florida
  • Glendale, New York

In addition, the bill consolidates 10 postal naming bills that have been reported favorably by the Committee, passed the House, and are awaiting Senate action. They include:

Background

In each case where a new zip code is being requested, local officials have been unsuccessful in appealing to the Postal Service for zip code changes to address real issues residents are facing concerning mail delivery. Each request has the support of its relevant Member of Congress.
