Floor Situation

On Monday, May 19, 2014, the House will consider H.R. 4268, a bill to Amend Title 23, United States Code, with Respect to United States Route 78 in Mississippi, and for other purposes, under suspension of the rules.  H.R. 4268 was introduced on March 14, 2013 by Rep. Alan Nunnelee (R-MS) and referred to the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

Bill Summary

H.R. 4268 permits the continued operation of trucks on any segment of U.S. Route 78 in Mississippi from mile marker 0 to mile marker 113 that is designated as a route of the Interstate Highway System.  Moreover, this legislation prohibits federal weight limitation requirements from applying to trucks that could operate legally on this stretch of highway prior to its designation.

Background

United States Route 78 in Mississippi is expected to become a part of the Interstate Highway System this year.  Without any changes, trucks currently operating on this highway would no longer be permitted to continue.  This change allows trucks currently operating on this highway to continue to use it after it becomes part of the Interstate Highway System.  This legislation also grandfathers in the types of trucks operating on the highway.

Cost

No cost is expected.
