The Senate Amendment to H.R. 2941 is expected to be considered on the floor of the House on Thursday, December 16, 2010, under a motion to suspend the rules, requiring a two-thirds majority vote for passage. The House approved the original bill by voice vote on September 30, 2010. The Senate approved H.R. 2941 with an amendment by voice vote on December 10, 2010.
The bill would reauthorize Johanna’s Law, which directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to conduct a campaign to increase the awareness and knowledge of health care providers and women with respect to gynecologic cancers. The bill also would authorize additional activities including outreach to state and local governments to determine best practices for providing information, services, and awarding grants to entities to test and compare outreach and education strategies.
Lastly, the bill would authorize the appropriation of $18 million for fiscal years 2012 through 2014.
In December 2006, the House of Representatives and Senate approved the Gynecologic Cancer Education and Awareness Act of 2005, or Johanna’s Law. The bill was signed into law on January 12, 2007.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that implementing the legislation would cost $17 million over four years.
