CONGRESSWOMAN ELISE STEFANIK
On Monday, July 22, 2013, the House will consider H.R. 2353, a bill to amend title 23, United States Code, with respect to the operation of vehicles on certain Wisconsin highways, under a suspension of the rules. The bill was introduced on June 13, 2013 by Rep. Tom Petri (R-WI) and referred to the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, which ordered the bill reported by voice.
H.R. 2353 permits the continued operation of commercial vehicles on U.S. Route 41 corridor after that segment of road is designated as a part of the Interstate Highway System. Any vehicle that could operate legally on that segment of road prior to its designation as part of the Interstate Highway System would be able to continue without regard to federal weight limitation requirements.
Currently, an "Interstate Highway" designation is being planned for assignment to different portions of U.S. Route 41 and other roads between Milwaukee and Green Bay. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is currently studying what improvements need to be made in order for the road to be designated and adequately prepared as an Interstate.
No formal CBO estimate is currently available.
