Floor Situation

On Monday, July 14, 2014, the House will consider H.R. 2223, a bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 220 Elm Avenue in Munising, Michigan, as the “Elizabeth L. Kinnunen Post Office Building,” under a suspension of the rules.  H.R. 2223 was introduced on June 3, 2013 by Rep. Dan Benishek (R-MI) and referred to the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which ordered the bill reported by unanimous consent.

Bill Summary

H.R. 2223 designates the U.S. Postal Service facility located at 220 Elm Avenue in Munising, Michigan, as the “Elizabeth L. Kinnunen Post Office Building.”

Background

Elizabeth L. Kinnunen emigrated to the U.S. from Finland in 1903, and operated a boarding house in Marquette, Michigan.[1]  Two of Ms. Kinnunen’s sons, Eiso and Raymond were killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge and the Korean War, respectively, “earning [her] the unfortunate distinction as a two-gold star mother.”[2]  Ms. Kinnunen died on April 5, 1974 at the age of 81.
