CONGRESSWOMAN ELISE STEFANIK
CHAIRWOMAN
The House is expected to consider H.R. 2097 on the House floor on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, under a motion to suspend the rules, requiring a two-thirds majority vote for passage. This legislation was introduced by Rep. Dutch Rupperberger (D-MD) on April 23, 2009.
H.R. 2097 would direct the Treasury Secretary to mint and issue $5 gold coins and $1 silver coins in commemoration of the bicentennial of the writing of the Star-Spangled Banner. The bill would require a design emblematic of the Battle for Baltimore during the War of 1812. It would limit the period for coin issuance to year 2012. The bill would impose a surcharge of $35 per coin for the $5 coins and $10 per coin for the $1 coins, which would be distributed to the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission for the purpose of supporting bicentennial activities, educational outreach activities, and preservation and improvement activities pertaining to the sites and structures relating to the War of 1812.
A CBO cost estimate of H.R. 2097 is not yet available.
