Cathy McMorris Rodgers Remarks as Prepared for Delivery:

“I echo what many here are saying about the President’s GITMO plan: That it’s a real disappointment. And I can’t help but think his plan is yet another distraction during this election year.

“You know, Monday was our first President — George Washington’s — birthday.  And as I think of George Washington, I am once again reminded of the type of leadership it took for him to shepherd our nation along.  President Washington truly understood the power of ‘We, the People.’

“And I believe Americans today are crying out for the same type of leadership that our nation’s first citizens demanded – and our first president embodied.

“I was reminded of this during my recent time in Eastern Washington – where I met with men and women involved in the ‘sharing economy.’  When I say ‘sharing economy,’ I’m talking about companies like Air BnB who are empowering people to make the best decisions for themselves.

“I met with a single mom who — thanks to the companies involved in this ‘sharing economy’ approach – has been able to build a community around herself and her family, where there wasn’t one before…And provide for her loved ones on her own schedule.

“And what I’m hearing from men and women like that single mom, is simple: ‘Don’t let the government get in the way.’

“In the People’s House, we hear you.   We hear you, and we’re working on an agenda for a more confident America – that trusts ‘We the People’ to make our own decisions for ourselves, and our families.”
