Six years ago today TransCanda applied for a permit to build the Keystone XL Pipeline. And for six years, President Obama has avoided making a decision – despite the fact that the majority of Americans approve building the pipeline.
While this behavior is a prime example of the President’s lack of leadership, more notably this is a delay to thousands of jobs and lower energy costs across the country. The project would create more than 42,000 direct and indirect jobs nationwide, and it would reduce American dependency on foreign oil by hundreds of thousands of barrels.
This week, House Republicans passed two bills to put Americans back to work and lower costs at home — right now. The American Energy Solutions for Lower Cost and More American Jobs Act is a common-sense energy plan comprised of solutions that focus on production, infrastructure, reliability, and efficiency. This bill includes passage of the Keystone XL Pipeline as well measures to increase American production of natural gas, find alternative electricity solutions, and ultimately lower costs at home and the pump.
The Jobs for America Act, which also passed this week, includes solutions that will grow the economy from the bottom up — by focusing on the growth of small businesses, simplifying our tax code, and helping Americans bring home more of their paychecks.
Americans are looking for solutions to the problems they are having now — waiting six years for a solution is unacceptable. House Republicans voted to act this week. These are the solutions Americans need — the House is acting, and now we hope the Senate will do the same.
