House Gop Lawmaker Wants Daschle Nomination Pulled |
|||
By Molly K. Hooper, The Hill |
Rep. Lynn Westmoreland is circulating a letter among his Republican colleagues that calls on President Obama to pull Tom Daschle's nomination to be secretary of Health and Human Services, "effective immediately."
"Leadership follows from example," the Georgia Republican wrote in the letter obtained by The Hill. "When do one or two 'innocent' tax mistakes become an example to the nation that our tax laws are to be willingly discarded?"
Furthermore, the lawmaker stated "his confirmation would seriously undermine your call to change the way business is done in Washington. ... Are we in danger of sending a message that tax avoidance is only acceptable if you are a member of Congress or the Cabinet?"
Though House members do not vote on Cabinet nominees, Westmoreland said that it's important for the president to know that they disapprove of the "appearance of impropriety surrounding former Sen. Tom Daschle [and] we urge you to withdraw his nomination, effective immediately."
It is unclear how many Republicans have signed the letter and when it will be sent to the White House.
In a letter sent to Senate Finance Committee leaders this weekend, Daschle apologized for "the errors that required me to amend my tax returns."
“I apologize for the errors and profoundly regret that you have had to devote time to them,” he wrote.
President Obama and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) on Monday offered their support for Daschle. Asked if he still supports Daschle's nomination after the former Senate majority leader’s admission that he failed to pay more than $140,000 in back taxes, Obama responded, “Absolutely.”
The Daschle tax issue was the main topic of Monday's White House press briefing as press secretary Robert Gibbs fielded over a dozen questions on it.
