Putnam: "Time Is Running Out" on Democrats' No-Energy Energy Agenda

July 24, 2008

  • “The time is running out for Democrats in charge of Congress. With only one week left until the Democratic Congress adjourns for the long month of August, House Republicans’ message couldn’t be clearer: give the American people an up-or-down vote on the American Energy Act before the August break.”

WASHINGTON – Rep. Adam Putnam (R-FL), Chairman of the House Republican Conference, issued the following statement on the Democrats’ no-energy energy agenda:

“Democrats in charge of Congress are simply running out the clock, wasting another day as American families struggle with $4 gas. Democrat leaders continue to shut the House down to any real legislation to address America’s energy crisis. They refuse to allow a vote on bipartisan, meaningful energy solutions for one reason and one reason only: they know it will pass and be signed into law. That’s irresponsible.

“Today’s action by the Democrats is a gimmick that doesn’t pass the smell test. The Democrats’ answer to our long-term energy challenge is three-and-a-half days worth of oil. Their bill will cost taxpayers more, not less, and draw down our strategic oil reserves in a dangerous world. If it became law, we would be more dependent, not less, on oil from unfriendly nations around the globe.

“The American people in overwhelming numbers support House Republicans’ ‘all-of-the-above’ solutions to increase energy supply, improve energy efficiency and promote renewable and alternative energy technologies. Yesterday, we introduced this plan as the American Energy Act, yet Democratic leaders are refusing to give this legislation a debate and a vote.
