SAY WHAT? Democrats' Doublespeak on American-Made Energy Production

July 21, 2008

 SAY WHAT?

Democrats’ Doublespeak on American-Made Energy Production

Last Year: Natural Resources Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV) Said Oil and Gas “Development Has Been Thriving,” Drilling “Dramatically Increased”

This Year: Chairman Rahall Says Energy Producers Are “Sitting On” Leases,
“Hold[ing] Back Domestic Production”

“Thriving,” “Rapid” in 2007

“Sitting Idle” in 2008

Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV): "Development has been thriving. Oil and gas drilling has dramatically increased. It is obvious by the sheer number of rigs that are sprouting up all over the West and drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.  The energy development function at MMS has been running at full throttle…." (Statement, 3/20/07)

Resources Committee Hearing Advisory: “In an ongoing effort to examine the rapid oil and gas development that has taken place on our nation's public lands in recent years…” (4/24/07)

Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV): “Big Oil, as many Americans already suspect, are perfectly fine with high gasoline prices at the pump while they hold back domestic production on federal leases and enjoy world record profits.” (Release, 6/12/08)

Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV): "Yet, we have found that the oil industry is sitting on 68 million acres of federal oil and gas leases, the size of Colorado.  They are stockpiling them.” (Release, 6/18/08)
