GOP Talkers on DOD Authorization and Hate Crimes

GOP Talkers on DOD Authorization and Hate Crimes

OCTOBER 8, 2009
  • We are strong supporters of our men and women in uniform and have visited them on numerous occasions.

  • It is inappropriate for the Majority to try and enact divisive, liberal social policies on the backs of our soldiers.

  • The Democrat Majority is once again taking their eye off the critical issues facing the American people and instead   promoting their extreme liberal agenda.

  • "Hate crimes" provisions in this legislation are contradictory to the First Amendment and are unnecessary.

  • We disdain racism, sexism and bigotry.

  • Unfortunately, these "hate crimes" provisions are broad enough to encompass legitimate religious beliefs.

  • Under this legislation, any pastor, preacher, priest, rabbi or imam who gives a sermon out of their moral traditions about sexual practices could be found guilty of a federal crime.

  • This will have a "chilling effect" on religious expression from churches, temples and mosques and it must be undone.
